IT IS NOW A YEAR SINCE SET UP OF ‘PRIZIV’ – A YEAR OF STRUGGLE FOR FREE, QUALITATIVE AND PUBLIC EDUCATION

The student-pupil movement ‘Priziv za Obrazovanie’(Appeal for Education) is one-year old on 11 May, 2008.
The initiative was born as a sporadic reaction of a group of students and pupils to the foreseen amendments in the Law of Higher Education. ‘PRIZIV’ organized its first protest action against the offensive of the market mechanisms on 11 May 2007.

After 11 May 2007 part of the 'PRIZIV' activists insisted on the group to continue its activity although the occasion for its bringing together is over – namely, the attempt to make the universities economically independent that would have meant a sharp rise in education fees - but still lots of problems exist in the sphere of education.

A number of critical moments followed (including meanest betrayals) but the initiative did not die away and from a temporary student-pupil group united by a concrete occasion, it turned into a permanently working student-pupil group with the perspective and intention to grow into Organization of the Students in Bulgaria.

‘PRIZIV’ has made its aim to organize the students for withstanding their right to free, qualitative and public education (rudely violated) in order to ensure for Bulgaria creative persons that love their people and are prepared to serve it.

Meanwhile, many of the first initiators left our movement. They were not prepared for a continuous struggle. They either did not believe in the success at all or they thought, it would come easily and quickly and when this was not the case, they just quit. They did not understand that the tasks set require regular and systematic work - not a sporadic one and jumping from issue to issue. They also did not believe in their own strength and the students’ strength but relied on some side factors (media attention, financing from some EU programmes, help from various ‘experts’ neither understanding nor interested in their problems, etc.)

‘PRIZIV’ has not disappeared notwithstanding the efforts in that direction. On the contrary, relying on its own power and carrying on a systematic and regular organization work, the group has become stronger and has successfully taken part in numerous actions: participation in protests of students, teachers and scientists; sticking of posters; maintenance of website; participation and organization of discussions at the University of Sofia on education issues; issue and distribution of student’s bulletin, etc. All these activities resulted, first, in increasing the number of students and pupils involved in ‘PRIZIV’ and, second, in the initiative's expansion and development.

The bulletin that we have been issuing is a result of our one-year development. We are not under an illusion that we can make a sudden change of the dominating apathy and inertness among the learners by means of a bulletin containing 12 pages. It is our duty as organized studying young people to point out the problems of the Bulgarian education and the low level it has been plunged to, and to insist that it is not a NON-reversible process but a process with an alternative: Free, qualitative and public education – a national priority. Let this basic message of ours reach the other studying young people! We are convinced that the keenest among them, if not today, tomorrow will take part in our Initiative for setting up Organization of the Students in Bulgaria
